Good Design Saves Money
The most under appreciated parts of the roof are the roof gutters. They are essentially the only thing standing between the maintenance of your yard and the ravages of Mother Nature. When rain falls, your gutters direct the flow of water in an attempt to prevent the wild elements from flooding your yard and ruining your gardens. In a perfect world, roof gutters would be enough. Roof gutter design wouldn’t have to worry about debris or dirt or sticks or leaves clogging up the gutters, and water would flow freely and smoothly out of the gutter, down the drain, and into safe areas. There would be no flooding and no need for gutter guards. Unfortunately, the world isn’t perfect, and with rain inevitably comes debris, dirt, and other items that clog your gutters and obstruct the normal healthy flow of water. Proper roof gutter design encompasses the fact that rain isn’t all that goes into your gutters, and it employs gutter guards that keep debris out and allow water in.
When it rains, it’s often windy. If the wind is strong enough, leaves, sticks, and assorted debris gets blown around with the rain. Falling rain also knocks leaves off of trees. All in all, it’s a perfect storm. Rain, dirt, sticks – they’re all whipping around and getting stuck in places. As the water flows down the roof toward the roof gutter, it usually brings debris with it. When the water flows into the gutter, the debris goes right along with it. Unfortunately for the homeowner, water is liquid and debris is solid. Liquids flow, while solids congregate. The rainwater flows out of the drain, and the debris clogs up and forms a dam. This doesn’t just prevent the water from flowing; it also weighs down the roof gutter and weakens its foundations. Good roof gutter design uses a gutter protector, or a gutter guard to prevent the debris from clogging the gutters.
